Classical Conversations Cycle 3 Week 5

|

Classical Conversations cycle 3 week 5 is filled with lots of fun learning! The five senses activities included nature and popcorn for two exciting ways to study our science this week. George Washington included too many books to count and some fun sugar cube buildings. Five weeks in and we have officially created a good rhythm in our home for getting through all of our supplemental activities that make learning all our memory work extra fun!!! Hope you will join us for this weeks recap of CC in our home!

BIBLE:

Sometimes it’s the simplest things you incorporate that make a huge difference! I have so loved having memory work with my children each week. It creates conversation. It causes us to search the surrounding scriptures for context. We often find new gems in Gods word that we had rolled past when reading.

Our family participates in a program that encourages all the kids participating to memorize 100 verses in a year. My kids have done this for three years now. They often memorize much longer passages than one verse, but there is something about focusing in on one verse as a family that really impacts us.

This year in order to help my kindergartener with his handwriting I purchased this Bible Verse Handwriting practice book for kids off Amazon. We would use a verse in his book and then my big kids would write it as well in a notebook. It includes multiple pages per verse for my kindergartener to work on each day as we went over our verse.

Also it’s important for our kids to see us memorizing along side them!!! Do the work with them!

SCIENCE:

Week five of science is one with endless possibilities for at home expansion! One that I didn’t do was create a blindfolding game where they use their senses to guess the item. That would be so fun though. I saw this adorable popcorn idea on Pinterest and knew my kids would love it! Not only that but we were trying Indiana popcorn for our state this week. I love when things work out!

We tried both the buttery and the drizzled version of the popcorn and I let my kids come up with words for our popcorn pieces. My personal favorite is that it taste bomb.com, lol. I created the pieces for my board and I will link the free printable below!

We also went on a nature walk and drew pictures of what we saw, heard, touched, smelled, and could taste. Both my boys put that they smelled chicken poop. Oh the joys of being a boy mom. My daughter however put flowers. I also loved their answers on what they heard. Bock and Meow. All my answers were different than theirs. No surprise, kids see the world differently than us adults. I also created this five senses nature walk sheet. It is in the same download as the popcorn!

Don’t forget to watch Doodling Through Educations video for this week, linked here. We also loved this video on the five senses from the Magic School Bus, linked here.

HISTORY:

Honestly the possibilities were also endless when looking at George Washington. So many adorable activities, crafts, books, etc. I would definitely do a Pinterest search for this one to find other ideas for your kids. I went with building the Capital and the Washington Monument with sugar cubes. It was simple but my kids loved it! They also learned eating sugar cubes isn’t as tasty as they had anticipated.

This is one of those topics where you can just read and read and read. So many amazing books to look at! I am getting ahead with my weeks for my blog in the summer so we are going to go see Young Washington in theaters this Friday. Should be a great resource and movie night for this week!

Honestly I am so thankful for Doodling Through Education. I love being able to put zero effort into finding supplemental information for each week. Instead I just automatically go find her videos every week for science and history. You can find her video on George Washington here.

MATH:

Here is a picture of my math resource I created to help my kids practice their math memory work. We are really striving for memory master this year and this is an area we have struggled in.

In this digital download you will get flashcards that look patriotic with all the multiplication, squares, and cubes. It also comes with two ways to practice math facts. One way is dry erase and the other involves matching the answers. There is also fun fill in the blanks for the remainder of the 24 weeks memory work.

If you are interested in incorporating this resource for your children to practice their math also I will share the link to it here!

LATIN:

Here is a picture of my latin resource I created for this year’s memory work. Pictured is the matching and flashcards for classical conversations cycle 3 week 2. I created fun matching pages and flashcards. It also comes with pages that have the entire John 1 song in latin and English!

If you are interested in implementing this I will share the link to it here!

GEOGRAPHY:

Some weeks are easier than others and this was an easy one. I wanted to highlight the fact that Indiana was the biggest supplier of popcorn. As many times as I have seen these bags of drizzled popcorn at the grocery store I had never paid attention to the fact that it was Indiana popcorn. I for sure took the easy route and just bought the bagged popcorn. Obviously when looking at the words my kids used to describe it in science it was a hit!

We also have a lot of hot dog lovers in my home. We made a Michigan style coney dog for lunch one day this week. I don’t do mustard so I did cheese with my chili dog, but chili with mustard and onion is their state tradition. I also found an entire new set of books at the library this week. There is one book per state. They look old but I was super excited for a new resource to use each week.

FINE ARTS:

CC Cycle 3 Week 5 is all about perspective! I love when lots of the elements of the week tie together with the history sentence! Inside the lines has two separate videos showing perspective. Each of the videos is depicting the Washington Monument. The first is fit for ages 4-6. You can find that video here. The second is fit for ages 10-11. You can find that video here.
