Cold and flu season is here and I dont know about you but I feel like its worse this year than normal. Everyone I know has someone in their family sick with the flu, pneumonia or just the common cold. If your anything like my husband you want to have something to suck on and sooth your throat at all times. I swear that man could eat 1 entire bag of cough drops in a day. So since we go through so many of them I decided to try and make some at home.

I set out to make these for many reasons but most of all the health benefits these have over store bought cough drops. As is most items from the store they contain ingredients that aren’t needed especially when trying to boast your immune system. I love controlling what you put in the cough drops as well as the size and flavors. I prefer to have smaller drops as they are easier to suck on. I also prefer just honey but my husband loves to add lemon into his. When making these at home you can easily make multiple kinds in one go and make everyone happy.

Varieties

  • Adding a couple tbsp of elderberry syrup is perfect for an immune boast.
  • Lemon is a good addition for some extra vitamin c.
  • If you have ginger and turmeric extract or powder that would be a wonderful addition if you also needed something to settle your stomach.
  • Ceylon Cinnamon, Clove or echinacea are also great additions to these cough drops.

Items You Need

  • Saucepan
  • Candy Thermometer
  • Spoon
  • Measuring Cups

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Add as much honey as you want to your saucepan. A little goes a long way. I wouldn’t do more than 1 cup. Cook on medium heat stirring frequently until honey starts to bubble. Once it starts to bubble or boil then add your candy thermometer and bring to exactly 300 degrees. You will need to stir this constantly to make sure it doesn’t scorch the honey. If you need to turn the heat down some because the honey is boiling to high then do so.
  2. Once honey reaches 300 degrees it is at the hard crack stage and needs to be taken off the heat immediately.
  3. Once taken off the heat I like to give it a minute for the bubbles to calm down so you get smooth drops. Then take a 1/2 tsp scoop and pour drops onto wax paper or parchment. Some people like to pour them directly onto powdered sugar but this is not my preferred method.
  4. Once you have poured all the honey drops out let them completely cool. Once cooled you can store them in a jar by themselves or you can coat them in a little powdered sugar to keep them from sticking to each other. I would suggest using the powered sugar because they can get sticky and hard to break apart.
